Speaker information

Jenny Watson, Chair, Electoral Commission

As the Parliamentary Voting System and Constituency Bill makes its way through Parliament, it looks increasingly likely that there will be a national referendum on 5 May 2011 to determine how MPs are elected to the House of Commons. Voters will be asked whether they want to retain the current first past the post system or replace it with the alternative vote (AV). The referendum is scheduled to occur on the same day as elections in Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, and to local authorities in England. International experience shows that voter turnout increases when referendums are combined with elections. However, referendum issues tend to be overshadowed by the wider election campaign. At this seminar, Jenny Watson, Chair of the Electoral Commission, will give a post referendum seminar discussing issues surrounding the administration of the referendum and lessons which can be learned for the future.
