Farr Short Courses: Hospital Episode Statistics
The Farr Institute London
222 Euston Road | London | NW1 2DA | United Kingdom
Hospital Episode Statistics are probably the largest but also one of most complex sources of data about healthcare activity. They have been used by researchers to answer the widest possible range of questions about health and healthcare services.
This course will focus on the practical difficulties of doing research using hospital episode statistics. You will learn how HES data are structured and coded, how to clean HES data, how to link episodes and create analysable files. You will learn from HES researchers about the strengths and weaknesses of the data, about common sources of errors, what ethical and legal obligations govern the use of the data and how the data can be linked with other datasets to answer new and different questions.
Part of 'Harnessing Electronic Health Records for Research', a unique programme of 13 inter-related short courses in the rapidly developing field of electronic health records research.
