Public Lecture “Turn a Light on and Change the World”
Gustave Tuck Lecture Theatre |
Gower St | London | WC1E 6BT | United Kingdom
Professor Clare Elwell, Professor of Medical Physics, UCL, Clare Elwell is Professor of Medical Physics at University College London (UCL). She completed a BSc and MPhil in Physics with Medical Physics at Exeter University, and a Ph.D in Medical Physics at University College London. Throughout her career as a medical physicist she has worked at the interface of technical development of instrumentation and its application in the clinical and life sciences. She now leads a large multidisciplinary research team developing novel optical techniques to image the brain to investigate acute brain injury, autism, malnutrition, malaria, migraine and depression.
Innovations and breakthroughs in physics and engineering have led to a host of new technologies which are providing ever more detailed information about the human body in health and disease. Nowhere are these breakthroughs more exciting than in the field of brain imaging. Novel optical techniques are transforming the possibilities for when, where and how we can image human brain opening up whole new areas of research.
This talk will include discussion of our recent work using optical imaging to investigate early markers brain development in infants at risk of autism in the UK, and in infants at risk of malnutrition in rural Africa.
