Speaker information

William Raban, Director
Matthew Beaumont, Chair, Dept of English, UCL

In the second Nocturnal City film evening, we explore the inequalities of the city at night.

We will screen 'The Houseless Shadow' (William Raban, 2011), a contemporary portrait of London at night (inspired by Charles Dickens’s essay 'Night Walks'), which explores social inequality in the city. Raban will be in conversation with us for a Q&A session.

We will also show two companion films: 'Nice Time' (Claude Goretta/Alain Tanner, 1957), a documentary made as part of the Free Cinema movement, which was filmed over 25 weeks in and around Piccadilly Circus; and 'Under Night Streets' (Ralph Keene, 1958), a British Transport Films documentary about the track workers and "fluffers" (track cleaners) who maintain the London Underground system at night.

  • PLEASE NOTE THE VENUE HAS CHANGED FROM BLOOMSBURY THEATRE STUDIO TO THE AV HILL LECTURE THEATRE*
