Databases are increasingly being used for the rapid querying and construction of complex datasets in health and social care. This short course will introduce the theory behind the relational data model and enable participants to understand how data can be modelled and stored in a relational database and the different data types that are used.
Through practical-driven sessions, participants will learn how to model biomedical data in a contemporary relational database management system and how to craft simple and complex queries for analysing and transforming the data.
By the end of the course, participants will be able to load, format and export data in a format suitable for analysis by common statistical packages.
Part of 'Harnessing Electronic Health Records for Research', a unique programme of 13 inter-related short courses in the rapidly developing field of electronic health records research.
