Wallander, The Killing, Borgen. We’re watching more and more TV series with subtitles. Theatre audiences are welcoming visiting productions in their original language supported by surtitles including the Globe to Globe season at Shakespeare’s Globe and the Barbican’s BITE programme.

Dr Geraldine Brodie (UCL Translation Studies) uncovers the detailed workings of subtitling in live performance, and discusses the inventive ways in which these visible translations are incorporated into productions to enhance the audience’s engagement with a play’s original language and culture.
