Speaker information

Neill Lochery, Professor, UCL, Neill Lochery is the Catherine Lewis Professor of Middle Eastern & Mediterranean Studies at University College London. He has written a series of critically acclaimed books on the region. His other recent works on Portugal include Lisbon: War in the Shadows of the City of Light, 1939-1945.

Professor Lochery will introduce his new book, Out of the Shadows, Portugal from Revolution to the Present Day (Bloomsbury | Editorial Presenca 2017) in this special lecture event with the Embassy of Portugal at University College London.

Are Portugal’s best days behind her? Portugal’s decline has become a common theme put forward by historians and commentators who have focused their attention on the golden era of discoveries, the Empire and the role of Lisbon as a major Atlantic power. In his new book, Professor Neill Lochery argues against the idea that Portugal is in an inevitable downturn, suggesting instead that the country is an exciting and vibrant nation emerging from the shadows of political and economic hardship.

“Neill Lochery illuminates our history so well…he has written the 20th Century history of the Portuguese without bias…” Joao Ceu e Silva | Diario de Noticias, Portugal (April 2017)
