We can detect in a few seconds whether a piece of music we are listening to is romantic in style. So we ought to be able to say what features of the music allow us to make this judgement. By drawing on a series of ideas in the philosophy of action, the philosophy of perception, and a theory of what it is to hear emotion in music, Professor Christopher Peacocke finds that question can be answered. Even if you do not agree with the answers he offers, some enjoyable audio excerpts will enhance your lunchtime.
