Speaker information

Agnes Arnórsdóttir, Professor, Aarhus Universitet

This workshop treats the writing of “Málar og máldagar” in the late medieval age in Iceland. Those were written agreements about property. “Máli” was a pre-emption agreement, normally used over the special type of marriage agreement, which allowed the wife to have a separate landholding. But it was also used over church property, and “máldagi kirkju” was a special document recording the property belonging to a church. This workshop will both focus on the origin of these texts and how they were used as evidence for ownership of landed property.
