Speaker information

Dr Andy Merrifield

Increasing urbanization globally and the rise of the global-world metropolitan region - what Ed Soja calls "megalopolitan" region -- creates havoc for traditional city theory and a politics based on some right to the city. Now that the city is no longer a definable and defined "object" as we once knew it, what does it mean for analysis and for some sort of broadly termed Marxist politics of the city as Lefebvre conceived it?

Dr Andy Merrifield's recent publications are

  • Metromarxism: A Marxist Tale of the City (2002)
  • Guy Debord (2005)
  • Henri Lefebvre : A Critical Introduction (2006)
  • Magical Marxism: Subversive Politics and the Imagination (2011)
