In China, concepts of the nation or the state are being questioned and replaced by a self-identity as a modern civilisation of 5,000 years duration. The guest speaker and his respondent will debate this Chinese interest in modern civilisations.

The event launches UCL's new Centre for Research on the Dynamics of Civilisation (CREDOC) and will be followed by a reception in the Department of Anthropology common room from 8-9pm.
