From critical to digital to green, infrastructure is arguably the most defining feature of the organisation, functioning and wellbeing of modern societies. Despite its pervasiveness infrastructure lacks general visibility and public profile. Infrastructure is valued mainly for the revenues and profits it generates, rarely just for representing an array of the most ‘complex engineering feats in world history’ or for enabling and symbolising meaningful social relations or national and cultural identity.

This STEaPP Seminar will explore the impact of infrastructure’s fuzzy and fragmented meanings on its design and performance. The panel will discuss the need for deeper, systematic consideration of “infrastructure” to re-establishes its relevance, purpose and value for modern societies.
