The recent student demonstrations were reported in the mainstream media as demonstrations about the coalition government’s proposed rise in tuition fees. But there was scant debate about the huge cuts and fundamental changes to arts and humanities funding that are also part of the proposed changes. Is this because as a nation we don’t care about these subjects? ‘Surplus to requirements?’ is a three day event organised by the Slade PhD students that will comprise of an exhibition, installations, performances and presentations given by students and invited artists, theorists and curators, around the theme of the ‘value’ and the significance of art and research in the current political and economic climate.

Wednesday 2 March: Exhibition open 10:00am - 5:00pm Thursday 3 March: Symposium 9:30am - 5:00pm & exhibition and live events open 6:00pm-8:00pm Friday 4 March: Exhibition open 10:00am - 1:00pm
