Jockin Arputham, Slum Dwellers International, Founder of the National Slum Dwellers Federation of India President of Slum Dwellers International

Jockin Arputham is perhaps the world's best known urban grassroots leader. He has helped federations of shack dwellers to form in India and many other nations and helped form Slum/Shack Dwellers International, a network through which the many national federations work together and learn from each other. He has visited over 60 different nations and in each, he encouraged and supported the formation of city and national federations. He also helped pioneer a range of tools to support community mobilization, including community-driven enumerations.
