Since Vedic times healing plants and specifics of their curative properties were well known to physicians and healers from all levels of Indian society. A large body of European books from the 16-19th centuries also document folk and classical medical traditions of India, collected from indigenous sources. With the ability to study complex molecular pathways and chemistry of their properties that were unknown at the time, are these works are now valuable resources to be revisited with contemporary scientific methods?

With Dr Annamma Spudich (Visiting Professor, National Center for Biological Sciences, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Bangalore, India); Prof Michael Heinrich (Professor of Medicinal Plant Research, UCL School of Pharmacy); and Prof Frances Brodsky (Director, UCL Division of Biosciences).
