Speaker information

Sir John Gurdon, Emeritus Professor, University of Cambridge

This year the Prize Lecture will be given by Professor Sir John Gurdon. Sir John is a pioneering researcher in embryonic stem cells and cloning. In 2009, he was awarded the Lasker Award and in 2012, he and Shinya Yamanaka were awarded the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for the discovery that mature cells can be converted to stem cells. His most recent research involves trying to find ways of obtaining embryonic cells from the cells of an adult. The eventual aim is to provide replacement cells of all kinds starting from easily obtainable cells of an adult individual.
