Speaker information

Dr Fabio De Sio, The Wellcome Trust Centre for the History of Medicine, UCL, Fabio De Sio graduated in Philosophy at the University of Naples Federico II and received a PhD in History of Science from the University of Bari, Italy. He worked at the Naples Zoological Station and is currently research fellow at the Wellcome Trust Centre for the History of Medicine at UCL.

'Philosophers, use your Brains' is the original title of JZ Young’s 1982 Shearman Lectures, later published under the more modest title of 'Philosophy and the Brain' (1987). The lecture will take the move from this attempt to draw the ultimate philosophical conclusions of his long personal and scientific involvement with the brain, animals and humankind. Dr De Sio will explore the emergence of the brain as an object of research in post-World War II Britain from a complex tangle of techniques, disciplines and multifarious 'models' – animals, diagrams and machines.
