Speaker information

Maria Betti, Director, EU-JRC- Institute for Environment & Sustainability

President Juncker, at his statement ahead of the vote of the European Parliament on the College, underlined that sustainability and environmental concerns are important to the EU citizens and that sustainable development is a principle enshrined in the EU Treaties and Charter of Fundamental rights and thus should be taken into account by all institutions in all their actions and policies. For this reason the horizontal responsibility for sustainable development has been included in the portfolio of the First Vice-President.

In this context IES contributes with its scientific activities mainly to three overarching principles, namely: sustainability, growth and resilience. This talk will focus on how these principles are underpinned by cross-cutting and enabling services for resource efficiency and sustainable development in a knowledge-based society.
