Adolescence, which was typically a time for emotional secrecy and physical exuberance, has become a time for sedentarism and emotional exhibitionism. In play, the real other is replaced by an electronic one, while the ego is inflated in its avatar. What is shown or said in chat rooms is both everlasting and immediately outdated, intensely important but also assumed to be of no consequence for the individual, who may break moral and social boundaries concerning sex or aggression with hardly a thought.
