Speaker information

Lord Gus O’Donnell, Visiting Professor, School of Public Policy, UCL

Lord Gus O'Donnell, former head of the Civil Service and Cabinet Secretary will give his Inaugural Lecture in his role of visiting Professor at UCL .

The British Government, like many in advanced Western economies, faces a pincer movement of ever greater spending pressures coupled with weak revenue growth. The way in which we have responded to issues like ageing, obesity, climate change and skills shortages with ever growing expectations that the State should provide the answers is in stark contrast with the decline in the ability of the state to raise enough finance.

In this lecture I want to paint the picture of the sunny uplands: to describe changes to how we are governed and to our policies that would deliver a more sustainable future with greater wellbeing. And then to bring you down to earth by explaining why these changes are unlikely to happen.
