Critics have long been concerned with how distant strangers have been portrayed by the media, charities, and NGOs; so-called ‘poverty porn’ or ‘flies in their eyes’ images. The conventional wisdom is that the negative, and often desperate and emotionally charged frames, are effective fundraising tools. But at what cost? We present evidence from a recent experiment testing how different types of appeals affect donation behaviour and engagement with global poverty.
