The development of Cuba's biomedical sciences has been driven by urgent economic and social imperatives, but has faced enormous international geo-political obstacles and resource constraints. In this seminar, two Cuban scientists, Dr Joel de Leon (CIM Centro de Inmunologia Molecular - Center of Molecular Immunology) and Dr Maria Amparo Pascual (CENCEC Centro Nacional de Examenes Clinicos - National Center of Clinical Trials) will share their insiders' insights into how the biomedical research programme has kept going despite the difficulties. They will also outline its remarkable achievements, and discuss prospects for the future as a lead industry in Cuban economic restructuring.
