Patrick Vallance, President, R&D, GlaxoSmithKline, Patrick Vallance is a clinician scientist. He is President, R&D, and is on the Board of GlaxoSmithKline and a member of the Corporate Executive Team. Prior to joining GSK Patrick led the Division of Medicine at UCL where he was appointed Professor at the age of 35. He moved to head drug discovery at GSK in 2006 and has been a pioneer of open innovation and interaction with academia as a way to improve creativity and enhance output. Since 2011 he has led R&D and during that period GSK has brought to market over a dozen new medicines targeting respiratory diseases, cancer, HIV, diabetes and other conditions, which affect millions of people across the world.

This annual prize lecture series has been running for 19 years and has become the pre-eminent series on contemporary science in Europe. The event, which provides an opportunity to debate and celebrate important scientific advancements, has always been very stimulating and enjoyable.

This year the Prize Lecture will be given by Dr Patrick Vallance.
