Dr. Friedrich W. Affolter, Education Specialist, UNICEF

This seminar will present the findings of a study commissioned by UNICEF and carried out by a research team at UCL Institute of Education. The project - ’A Systematic Policy Review of Early Years and Peacekeeping in Fourteen Conflict-affected and Post-conflict Countries’ was led by Dr. Lynn Ang and Prof. Sandy Oliver.

Conflict and fragile conditions that arise as a result of adversities such as civil wars, deprivation and emergency situations invariably compromise the lives of children. This research is concerned with a major issue, that of early childhood development and peacebuilding at a policy level in conflict- affected countries.

The study showed compelling reasons for increased prioritisation of the early years in the promotion of social cohesion and addressing inequalities. The seminar will provide an introduction to the research, conceptual framework, findings, and implications for policy and practice.
