Antanas Mockus, Mathematician/philosopher/former Mayor of Bogota

Colombian mathematician and philosopher, Antanas Mockus has had an outstanding career as a politician taking abstract ideas and concepts on civic engagement and construction of citizenship and applying them to solve people’s day to day problems. Using creative campaigns through street art, humour and exemplification, his achievements as two-term mayor of Bogota include a decrease in traffic fatalities by 50 per cent and a drop by 70 per cent in the city’s homicide rate. In 2010, Mr. Mockus gained the second highest ballot in the presidential elections in Colombia, earning more than 3,500,000 votes. His most recent research focuses on the study of coexistence and the relation between law, morality and culture.

Professor Antanas Mockus’ talk on ´The Culture of Peace´, describes the complexities of the Colombian armed conflict and proposes a transformation of thought and beliefs to foster a culture of conviviality and active social participation.
