Director Helke Misselwitz explores the space between reality and dreams. She travelled through East Germany talking to women about their private lives, treated as secondary within the ideology of the GDR. Mothers, intellectuals, punk rockers, shift workers and retired women talk openly about their families, careers, dreams and personal yearnings. Presented by Michael Stewart (Founding Director of Open City Docs Fest at UCL).

The film will be followed by a discussion introduced by Mary Fulbrook (Dean of the Faculty of Social and Historical Sciences), who travelled widely in the GDR and whose books include key works on GDR history. Frances Pine (Goldsmith's College), who works on gender and labour in socialist and post-socialist societies will also join the discussion.
