Speaker information

Leroy Hood, President, Institute for Systems Biology

Systems medicine is the application of systems-biology approaches to disease. These systems approaches both in animal models systems for neurodegeneration and cancer and in looking at human diseases have led to powerful new approaches to understanding disease and enabling new approaches to diagnosis and therapy. I will focus on several new opportunities that emerge from systems medicine and illustrate these transform how we approach disease and healthcare. These include dynamical studies of disease-perturbed biological networks, the complete genome sequence analyses of families to identify disease genes, a systems-approach to blood diagnostics, new approaches for the stratification of both diseases and patients and Framingham-like longitudinal studies of wellness. I will also discuss several emerging technologies including 3nd generation DNA sequencing.
