Speaker information

Professor Michael Ignatieff, Rector and President, Central European University, Michael Ignatieff is a university professor, writer and former politician. He is currently the Rector and President of Central European University in Budapest.His major publications are The Needs of Strangers (1984), Scar Tissue (1992), Isaiah Berlin (1998), The Rights Revolution (2000), Human Rights as Politics and Idolatry (2001), The Lesser Evil: Political Ethics in an Age of Terror (2004), and Fire and Ashes: Success and Failure in Politics (2013).

The Centre for Global Higher Education's third annual conference will explore the new geopolitics of higher education.

The conference will provide an opportunity to hear about our latest research findings and will include a keynote from world-renowned academic, journalist and former politician Professor Michael Ignatieff, President of Central European University, who will discuss academic freedom and the future of Europe.

Other keynotes and papers at the conference will address:

• Higher education and equality • The rise of higher education and research in China and the implications for world higher education • The consequences of student choice in higher education • Income contingent loans across the world • The changing UK higher education system • Student learning and graduate work • Public good in higher education, East and West
