Abstract: Brain Metabolites, such as N-acetylaspartate (NAA), soluble choline compounds (tCho),  creatine/phosphocreatine (tCr), Glutamate and others, reside almost exclusively inside cells and their diffusion properties are thus exclusively determined by the properties of the intracellular medium and by cellular geometry. The cell-type specificity of these metabolites make their diffusion properties a sensitive compartment-specific probe for intracellular microstructural changes brought upon by disease. In this talk, an introduction will be given to the methods used to measure metabolite diffusion, followed by current applications to multiple sclerosis and neuropsychiatric systemic lupus erythematosus (NPSLE).
