Speaker information

Ann Forsyth, Professor of Urban Planning, Harvard University

Good health has many causes and places are part of that picture, though a part often visualised in stark terms as an instigator of health problems and a support for good health. Struggling workers beside gritty smoke stacks or obese drivers stuck in suburban traffic jams are juxtaposed with community gardeners in walkable neighbourhoods or safety-conscious cyclists on new bike paths.

Ann Forsyth will unpack these images, examining the multiple connections between health and place through exposures, connections, and behaviour support. The lecture will delve deeper into how much place matters, to which populations, in what sort of places, and over what time periods. In this century of urban and demographic change, these are key questions for urban professionals.
