Speaker information

Dr Vladimir Smith-Mesa, UCL

UCL Institute of the Americas is pleased to support the multidisciplinary project 'The Other and the Moving Image' convened by Dr Vladimir Smith-Mesa (UCL SSEES - Library Services). The first of three events, an evening of talks and screenings, is a UK celebration of the 130th anniversary of the abolition of slavery in Cuba which also serves to mark a significant date in the history of the Americas: the first visit of the first Afro-American US President, Barack Obama to Havana, Cuba.

Two short videos will be followed by presentations by guest speakers Dr Stephen Wilkinson (International Institute for the Study of Cuba); Dr Helen Yaffe (London School of Economics - LSE); Sheila Ruiz (Film Africa, the Royal African Society’s annual London Film Festival); Professor Ijeoma F. Uchegbu (UCL Pro-Vice-Provost for Africa and the Middle East) and Professor Kevin C. MacDonald (UCL African Studies Research Centre). Then the film 'De Cierta Manera' (Dir.: Sara Gomez; Cuba) will be screened.
