Speaker information

Golam Khandaker, University of Cambridge

Speaker: Dr Golam Khandaker- A possible role of immune system in the pathogenesis of major mental disorders such as psychosis was postulated over a century ago with recent evidence pointing to links with infection and inflammation. The first half of this talk will discuss evidence from recent clinical epidemiological and genetic studies implicating infection and elevated circulating inflammatory markers in the pathogenesis of depression and schizophrenia, including recent findings from the ALSPAC and other birth cohorts. The second half will focus on clinical implications of these findings and include novel meta-analytic evidence on effectiveness of immuno-therapies for schizophrenia and depression.
