Despite recent stories reflecting the physical dangers of sport, sporting organisations and a range of politicians are keen to emphasise its positive physical and mental benefits for individuals and society as a whole. But what are the wider cultural and social effects of sport? Is sport a useful activity for bringing people together, or something that blinds us to the inherent nationalist, capitalist and discriminatory nature of modern society? Is sport something that encourages human expression, or something that constricts us within certain patterns, orders and rules? Does it promote health or physical self-abuse? This session considers a range of responses to these questions to consider the cultural role of sport in modern society.
