Speaker information

Shinya Yamada, Dr. Yamada is chief neurosurgeon at the Toshiba Rinkan Hospital in Japan. His main research topics are hydrocephalus and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) movement. Dr Yamada worked in the brain physiology laboratory at Brown University with Prof. Helen Cserr, whose discovery of interstitial fluid physiology is now known as a part of the glymphatic system. In 2004, Dr Yamada discovered that CSF fluid motion could be visualised using MRI arterial spin labeling techniques, in which CSF itself can be used as internal tracer. This technique allows for the non-invasive study of CSF movement in various regions without contrast administration. He now applies this MRI sequence to study CSF dynamics in people with normal brains and CSF-related disorders.
