Why do many middle and low-income countries devote less than 1% of their health expenditure to mental health, when mental health disorders represent a substantial proportion of the world's disease burden? This symposium will focus on primary care mental health. It will explore the difference in primary care systems in various parts of the world and what this means in terms of prevalence of mental health disorders, its recognition and treatment. The discussion will focus on what can be done to address this neglected issue.
