The next Development Planning Unit’s Dialogues in Development seminar will mark World Habitat Day with a panel discussion on ‘Climate change and cities’.

People living in informal settlements will feel the impacts of climate change most strongly, as floods, heat and untimely rainfall is projected to increase. Access to carbon intensive energy is, for the most part, unaffordable for people in informal settlements meaning that they are some of the lowest energy consumers. Past research has shown evidence of low carbon and climate resilient innovations in informal settlements, yet, to date there has not been a systematic analysis of how climate compatible development may change the lives of the urban poor living in informal settlements.
