A film by Jean Rouch and Edgar Morin 92'. Introduced by Michael Stewart and with Q&A. In the summer of 1960 two academics take a camera onto the streets of Paris and into the homes of their friends. Using the new lightweight 16mm film technology sync sound, they produced this exquisite film and revolutionised cinema. Others came to talk of the new documentary as 'fly on the wall'. Jean Rouch, who was inspired by the Russian modernist, Dziga Vertov, said he was a 'fly in the ointment.' Teasing, coaxing, caressing their characters, Rouch and Morin capture, in unforgettable style, a moment in French and European life.

This is the first ever screening in the UK of the remastered, digital version of Chronique d'un Été, released last year by the Comite de Film Ethnographique and this year in England by the BFI, to whom we are grateful for this opportunity.
