In this lecture Dr Ernest Schonfield will show how Berlin Dada artist John Heartfield refunctions mass media techniques in order to convey a socially progressive message in the age of mass propaganda. Heartfield’s photomontages subvert the mass media imagery of the Weimar Republic and the Third Reich by revealing the social inequalities and class antagonisms which the nationalist media tried to conceal. With a response byDr Sarah E. James.
